Vanderbilt added one of the top classes in school history with the program's 2012 signees and it appears James Franklin and staff are going to continue the momentum into Signing Day next year. On a previously quiet Thursday night, the Commodores added one of the top signal-callers in the South in Ellenwood (Ga.) quarterback Jonathan McCrary to give the school its first commitment in the 2013 class and a big one at that.
“It all happened fairly quick,” McCrary told 247Sports. “I called them and they said to call back that night and I did and he had the whole staff on the line, talking numbers and playing time and playing at Vanderbilt. I liked the environment and thought that that was pretty nice having the whole staff on the line. I had been calling back frequently and they’d always get the whole staff on the line.”
The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder is a true dual threat who held offers from powerhouse programs such as Alabama, Georgia and Florida State. The connection McCrary developed with the coaches and the fact that he would be the only incoming recruit at his position made all the difference in the world to him and resulted in an early commitment.
“Coach (Sean) Spencer just laid it on me talking about bringing me in as the only quarterback for the class of 2013 saying that I have a great chance of competing and being a starting quarterback for Vanderbilt,” he said.
A MaxPreps Top Junior for 2013, McCrary will be the cornerstone for Vanderbilt's next class and gives the program their quarterback of the future.
